The Symbolic Meanings of 2020

The warmth of the sun injects healing power in me, giving me the mental clarity to reflect on the state of humanity. More importantly, I asked, “What can I do to contribute to this new era of consciousness?”

The most basic right of every living being on this planet is the ability to breathe freely. My parents used to joke, “The air is free. Breathe in as much as you want.” After 2020, I know not even air can be taken for granted. Collectively, we are forced to examine the state of humanity with honesty so that we can heal humanity with integrity, gratitude and humility.

1. From family to society to Earth, how are we infringing on each other’s right to breathe freely, consciously and unconsciously?

  • Judging people who look, think or act differently, publicly or privately

  • Choosing not to forgive someone in order to feel a sense of justice

  • Controlling people in our personal life or at work because of our own insecurities

  • Being so critical of ourselves and abusing ourselves on a daily basis

  • Not giving our pets enough exercise and playtime

  • Raising animals for the sole purpose of consuming them

  • Creating pollutions that permanently damage the Earth and wild lives

The list goes on. Our involvements are deeper than we realize.

2. Freedom

On the global scale, I think of human trafficking and environments that restrict people from exercising their free will. There are certainly many ways to examine the cause for violation of free will but I find myself keep coming back to the most fundamental aspect of humanity - the beliefs we adopt from our tribes. Some of these beliefs hold true values that never change; some beliefs don’t hold any long-term values and are created to promote separation.

When we reflect on freedom individually, we are examining the belief and behavior patterns we use to interact with family, society and ourselves. Are these patterns preventing us from expressing our true opinions? Are we trying to be someone that we are not in order to gain acceptance?

We tolerate life circumstances because some of the belief patterns we learned since we were young stay with us. This makes changes hard. We say we value freedom but we act oppositely. We build a wall around us to keep ourselves safe. We trade our freedom for a false sense of security.

Painful experiences show us our deepest fear and insecurity. They let us know what we need to let go of in order to move on and thrive. Moving on as a transformed person is the most noble tribute we can pay to everyone and everything involved in teaching us the life lessons we learn.
